Wolves too strong for Stags | EFL CEFA League

Mansfield Town Football in the Community’s Post 16 Students suffered their first defeat of the season earlier this afternoon at the RH Academy, falling to a three-nil defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers C.

Played in strong, cutting winds, the Stags made a bright start to the match as they looked to build on last week’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest B – the visitors did well to cut out Freddy Bull’s fourth minute cross as striker Sam Harris looked for his second goal in as many games.

At the other end, goalkeeper Jamie Aston was called into action twice in the space of as many minutes, denying a goal bound effort on 11 minutes before moments later, reacted well as Wolves C looked to pounce on a loose ball.

Mansfield’s best chance of the game fell on 31 minutes with a well worked corner which saw Cole Twinn send a thunderous effort towards the net, he was denied by an equally good save from the Wolves keeper.

The visitors had been threatening to break the deadlock and eventually did so with ten minutes to go before the break, beating the offside trap and to convert neatly beyond Aston from the right hand side of the six yard box.

After the break the visitors upped the tempo in search of a second and thought they’d found it just two minutes in – the offside flag however cut short the celebrations.

On 50 minutes Sam Harris dragged an effort wide as the Stags saw a rare sight of goal, a missed opportunity which proved to be critical as on the hour mark, Wolves grabbed their second goal of the game.

The wind had been completely taken out of the Stags’ sail as Wolves enjoyed a prolonged spell with the ball, putting an effort wide on 68 minutes before being denied by Aston two minutes later.

Midfielder Joe Heverin nearly gave the Stags a glimmer of hope on 76 minutes as his effort from the edge of the box stung the palms of the keeper, however tired legs were very much setting in from the Stags perspective – Wolves took full advantage with six minutes to play adding a deserved third to put the game beyond any doubt.
