Joseph Whitaker Progress to EFL Girls Cup Regional Finals

Year seven and eight girls from Rainworth’s Joseph Whitaker School have progressed to the regional finals of the EFL Girls Cup, following Mansfield Town Football in the Community’s tournament for local schools at the One Call Stadium yesterday.

Nine teams from six of the areas schools competed in the competition on a sunny autumn afternoon, where Joseph Whitaker A triumphed following a tense penalty shootout against Ashfield B.

The teams were split into two groups playing each other once in matches of eight minutes each, Joseph Whitaker A were clear winners of Group A with two wins and a draw, whilst in Group B goal difference separated winners Ashfield B from second placed reigning champions Sutton Community Academy and Ashfield A.

The two group winners competed in the final in which Joseph Whitaker took the lead, however seconds from the full time whistle, goal hungry Ashfield B netted an equaliser to take the match to penalties, Joseph Whitaker successfully converting two of their three spot kicks to progress to the regional finals.

Gary Shaw, Community Manager at Football in the Community, said “A massive well done to Joseph Whitaker and all of the participating schools, every game was played in good spirits and we were proud to host a competitive tournament. We wish Joseph Whitaker A all the best in the regional finals and hope they do us proud!”

Emma Ridgeway, PE Teacher at Joseph Whitaker, said “I like the fact it [the EFL Girls Cup] gives the girls an opportunity to play with something to play for.

“There are loads of girls at Joseph Whitaker who love playing, I’ve probably left behind another 10 or 20 that I could have brought today as well, it’s really good at the minute with the majority of the girls playing for lots of different clubs.

“Tournaments such as this gives them lots of different skills such as team work, communication and learning how to lose, I think that’s important too – and obviously the enjoyment and fitness, they get so much from it.”

Cloe Elphik, PE Teacher at Ashfield School said “It’s a good little tournament; quite fast paced as well which gives the girls a chance to play football together in a team environment. It helps with team building and communication and all the girls love the competitive side.”
