Youngsters attending Mansfield Town’s 4-2 victory over Cheltenham on Saturday took home more than three points, as many took the chance to utilize Football in the Community’s Pop-Up Book Shop ahead of World Book Day this coming Friday.
Football in the Community are proud to be one of 45 professional football clubs, participating in the Premier League Primary Stars education program, and ran the Pop-Up Book shop, to celebrate World Book Day.
The pop-up book shop, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust and WH Smith gave youngsters the chance to either purchase a popular title for £1 or exchange for a World Book Day voucher, handed out by schools across the region and by ourselves on match-day.
Around two-hundred vouchers were used by youngsters on the day, as they took home specially published titles exclusive to this year’s World Book Day, giving many youngsters the freedom to choose their own book to own for the very first time.
Community Manager Gary Shaw said “Throughout the academic year we work tirelessly within schools as part of our Premier League Primary Stars intervention to get children reading, however for a high proportion of youngsters the reading time within schools is the only time they get – so to be able to host the pop-up book shop and make a change to that was really import to us.
“In today’s modern world there are so many distractions for a youngster that giving them a book to read and occupy their mind and tap into their creativity is no longer the go-to thing, one thing we found on Saturday was that youngsters really took time to find out more about each book and choose one that appealed to them.
“Sometimes the hardest thing is to get those aged twelve and upwards to pick up a book, but surprisingly they really did take an interest in what was on offer and every single one of them took a book away – it’s certainly something we’ll be looking to do again in the future.”
Youngsters who have a World Book Day token can still get a book from their local WH Smith, swapping the voucher for selected World Book Day titles or getting £1 off any other book in store (Terms and conditions may apply, ask in store for further details).
