The season may be over for Mansfield Town Football in the Community’s Futsal side, following a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe in the Futsal National Quarter Final, however the Stags can claim a successful season, as 19 Year Old Thomas Usher finished the campaign as leading goal scorer in the Midlands Futsal League.
Usher scoops the award after netting 24 goals over the course of the season, finishing some distance ahead of his competitors and coming within just five goals of taking Mansfield Town Football in the Community’s all time goal scoring record since joining the Futsal program.
The hot hitting 19 year old came so close to sending his side through to the National Semi-Final after netting a hat-trick in what proved to be the Stags’ final match of the season, as Mansfield fought but couldn’t quite progress past Scunthorpe who ran out 4-3 winners.
Speaking of Usher’s achievement, Futsal Development Officer Mark Lynk said “I’m absolutely delighted for ‘Tomo’ not only have his goals been pivotal to our progression this season, but he deserves the recognition for the professionalism he’s shown throughout his time with us.
“Futsal is a very technical game and despite having an 11-a-side background, his knowledge and understanding of the sport and the technicality needed to win games has really grown and helped his team mates to progress and develop in the sport. His attitude is second to none”
Reflecting on the end of the season, “A lot of teenagers come from an 11-a-side background and haven’t even heard of Futsal which can lead to a struggle in transition, however I’m really pleased with how this group have handled that and the respectable finish to the campaign.”
Elizabeth Regan, Education Officer, said “The end of the Academic Year is fast approaching meaning a lot of our students will be leaving us soon having completed their coursework and qualification, with Tomo getting this recognition for his efforts on the pitch it really spurs everyone on off of the pitch to achieve as higher grade as possible. I’m really proud of Tomo for his achievement and how all the students have progressed.”
Throughout his two year tenure with Football in the Community, Usher has really grown in confidence and has shone both on and off the pitch, achieving a call up two years in a row for the Futsal All Stars squad, and is now well on course to finish his qualification and take the next steps into becoming a Personal Trainer.
