King Edward book their place in the EFL Under 11s Kids Cup Local Final

King Edward Primary emerged victorious at the first of four qualifying tournaments, in this year’s EFL Under 11s Kids Cup, beating Brierley Forest on penalties.

Taking place at the new RH Academy, seven teams competed across two groups for a place in our area final in December, on an evening where youngsters braved cold and wet conditions to produce a highly competitive tournament.

Each team played each other twice in the group stage and after the first round of fixtures in Group A it looked like Holly Primary were certain to progress with three straight victories, however a narrow 1-0 win for Farmilo School in game four, opened the door for eventual finalists Brierley Forest, who ended up topping their group by a solitary point.

Over in Group B it was a much tighter affair with St Philip Neri and King Edward toe to toe throughout the afternoon, the group being decided in the final match of the afternoon, where King Edward held onto a 2-1 victory over Greenwood to top the group by three points.

The final itself was a far tighter affair and after ten minutes of action between the two group winners, a penalty shootout was needed to separate the two sides – King Edwards struck first and where handed the advantage when their keeper kept out Brierley Forest’s first spot kick.

Both sides scored the second of the three kicks but King Edwards held their nerve to convert the third and final penalty to book a place at our local final in December, the winner of which will represent Mansfield Town Football in the Community in the regional finals, a step closer to the national grand final at Wembley Stadium prior to the 2018-19 Sky Bet League Two play-off final.

Gary Shaw, Community Manager, said “Congratulations to King Edward who showed real determination to progress in the competition.

“I’m really proud of the kids today after playing in some horrible conditions, but it just goes to show how highly schools rate this competition – this year, judging by tonight, is shaping up to be the best year yet”

The final group standing were as follows

Brierley Forest 6 4 1 1 15 5 10 13
Holly 6 4 0 2 12 4 8 12
